Description
Belem is undoubtedly one of the most interesting districts of the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon. An enjoyable walk along the mighty Tagus River will bring you to a variety of historical points of interest. Among them, the 'Torre de Belem, pictured here. Built in 1515 with the purpose of guarding Lisbon's harbour entrance, the Belem Tower was the starting point of many of the Voyages of Discovery. Designed in the Manueline architectural style, this building is covered with stonework motifs depicting historical figures. Architect Francisco de Arruda had worked on Portuguese fortifications in Morocco and the Moorish influence is clearly visible in the watchtowers. I blended textures and grain with my original vintage style image to compliment the historic feel of this old world Portugese scene.
