Description
Belem is one of the most historical areas of Lisbon, Portugal. On a pleasant stroll along the banks of the Tagus River you will encounter many interesting attractions. It is very difficult to miss the wonderful 'Monument to The Discoveries' perched on the very edge of the river, looking out to sea since 1960 and celebrating the great Portuguese explorers. Close by is the ancient, gothic style Jeronimos Monastery, a fabulous symbol of Portugal's power and wealth during the 'Age of The Discovery', final resting place of Vasco Da Gama and UNESCO World Heritage Site. A little further along the riverfront and you will find the 'Torre de Belem. pictured above. Built in 1515 to guard the entrance to Lisbon's harbour, the Belem Tower was the starting point of many of the Voyages of Discovery. Built in 'Manueline Style' it is adorned with stonework motifs depicting historical figures. The architect Francisco de Arruda had worked on Portuguese fortifications in Morocco and you can see the Moorish influence in the watchtowers. Well worth a short tram ride if you're ever in the Portuguese capital.
