Description
The Speicherstadt (city of warehouses) area lies within the HafenCity Quarter in the Port of Hamburg. Built between 1883 and 1927 in the neo gothic, red brick architectural style, these buildings have entrances by land and water. Both impressive and grand, the UNESCO World Heritage status is certainly deserved. I decided to visit just before nightfall and it was a joy to watch these gloriously vibrant facades fade as daylight receded, a dusky glow enveloping the area, bringing with it the eeriest sense of calm and complete silence. The still water of the empty canals reflecting pale yellow lights from within, the tall silent buildings shrouded in a veil of mystery, it was easy to imagine I was alone in the city.
