In a prominent position high on the hillside, the monumental Basilica of Notre Dame de Fourviere overlooks the entire city of Lyon and can be seen from miles around. Constructed in the late 19th Century, with influences from both Byzantine and Romanesque architectural styles, this landmark building, affectionately known as the 'upside down elephant' is actually comprised of two churches, one built on top of the other. No visit to Lyon is complete without a fun trip up Fourviere Hill on the historic funicular to see this architectural wonder close up. I blended a little texture with my original photograph to compliment this historic French scene.
