I wasn't sure what to expect on exiting the elevator that had just transported me deep underground to the tunnel that would take me from one side of the Elbe River to the other on foot. I was pleasantly surprised by the natural light flooding into the entrance area through the large windows so high above, giving a feeling of roominess and warmth rather than gloom and darkness. The tiled walls are decorated with mosaics and nautical designs, adding to the welcoming vibe. At over 100 years old, the Old Elbe Tunnel is a great glimpse of nostalgia. It took four years to complete this passageway that sits 24 meters beneath the surface of the river and it is used round the clock, every day of the year, by pedestrians and vehicles, (which are also ferried up and down in huge elevators, great engineering and fun to watch). I added texture to this image to compliment the vintage feel.
I'm a travel photographer and photo artist. I like to explore every nook and cranny of anywhere I visit and I'm always looking out for something unusual or unique, weird and wonderful, interesting and intriguing. For me, half the challenge is in the initial taking of the photo, the looking for something that catches my attention, getting that perfect composition, but the other half is in the processing, the tweaking and twisting and the addition of a little imagination to see how much detail I can bring to the surface and hopefully let the viewer see the same as I did when I took the shot. My images have been shot here, there and everywhere, mainly in the historic cities of Europe and with the occasional one taken in my own surroundings...
