Description
Standing in Castle Square in the heart of the Polish capital of Warsaw's Old Town, taking in the beautifully colourful and historic surroundings, it's hard to believe that by the end of the Second World War, this incredible city had been reduced to almost nothing but rubble. Warsaw suffered unthinkable devastation and destruction and more or less everything you see had to be rebuilt from scratch using as many original bricks as possible. Only a few surviving fragments of the Royal Castle itself remained. I think it says a great deal about the spirit and determination of the people of Poland that after much work and dedication, this wonderful phoenix, has once again risen from the ashes to be a world class destination. This stunning building in the baroque and early mannerist architectural style is a must see on any visit. The Old Town has been placed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as "An outstanding example of a near-total reconstruction of a span of history covering the 13th to the 20th Century". Quite deservedly so. I blended a little texture with my original photograph to compliment the old world feel of this Polish street scene.
