Description
One of the most famous bridges in the world, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice is deserving of the attention it receives. Mystical and surrounded by various tales and folklore, it is easy to understand it's allure. Built in the early 17th Century and designed by Italian architect Antonio Contino, this small but ever so impressive bridge has stood the test of time and draws millions of visitors a year to it's little corner of Venezia. Originally the bridge served as a connecting walkway between the Doge's Palace and the prison and legend suggests that the bridge's name came about because prisoners heading to their execution would look out of the small windows and sigh over what they believed would be their last view of Venice. Whether or not there is any truth to this....who knows? I prefer to think that it got it's name because you can't help but sigh when you see it for the first time, just as I did. I hand blended textures and a vintage map of Venice from the year 1764 with my original photograph in black and white to compliment the old world feel of this classic Venetian scene.
