Description
Basel's Rathaus (Town Hall) is a striking building. A bold statement in vivid blood red sandstone amongst otherwise conservative surroundings, it dominates Marktplatz. It's that delicious red velvet cupcake at the bakery that catches your eye and holds your gaze every time you pass by, even if you're only in town for a loaf of bread. Over 500 years old, this highly decorative mish mash of architectural styles, with colourful frescoes adorning the walls and ceilings, a transparent glass elevator with all the moving parts visible, secret doors and winding staircases leading to towers, turrets and balconies and a rooftop view across the city, it really does have the aura of a medieval fairytale castle. It's the sort of place that has you wondering what lies behind each of those fanciful locked doors. I added a little texture to complete the vintage feel.

Gorgeous walkway with arches, columns, colors and that fabulous door. Even the sunlight and shadows echo the architectural beauty. Such an interesting description of this beautiful building. A delight to enjoy, Carol!! Wonderful capture. l/f/p
