Description
It's odd to have been waking around amongst the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Lucerne (or Luzern), Switzerland, turn and stroll along a side street and find yourself in this eerily quiet enclosed area of calm where the Lion of Lucerne rests, oblivious to the activity going on outside. This incredibly poignant monument was carved in 1820-21 and commemorates the Swiss Guards massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. Standing gazing up at the Sculpture of the gravely wounded Lion I was very aware of the silence and immediately understood why Mark Twain had once described it as 'The most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world".
