Description
An intrinsic part of the history of both Vila Nova de Gaia and Porto lies within its relationship with that most famous Portuguese drink, Port. The hillside in the very heart of the historic area, edging down towards the Douro River, is filled with underground tunnels and caves housing the vintage tipple. The Vibrant red cellar roofs dominate the landscape and scream out to be photographed. You absolutely cannot go there without sampling this deliciously sweet red wine. A romantic city crammed with authentic medieval architecture, vividly coloured pastel buildings standing side by side with decaying facades, an intriguing selection of differently styled bridges spanning the water and a host of other cultural delights all make this Northern Portuguese metropolis a world class destination with something to please everyone. On the left of the image is the Dom Luis I Bridge (Ponte Luis). An icon of the city, this double decked metal arch bridge has taken passengers on foot, by car, trolleybus and metro across the river and connected both cities since opening in 1886. I blended textures with my original black and white photograph to achieve a more painterly style which I felt suited this old world European scene.
