Description
It's a strange thing to have been wandering amongst the hustle and bustle of the busy city of Lucerne (or Luzern), Switzerland, turn and walk up a side street and find yourself in this eerily quiet enclosed area of calm where the Lion of Lucerne rests, oblivious to the activity going on outside. This incredibly poignant monument was carved in 1820-21 and commemorates the Swiss Guards massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution. Standing gazing up at the Sculpture of the gravely wounded Lion I was suddenly very aware of the hushed silence and immediately understood why Mark Twain had once described it as 'The most mournful and moving piece of stone in the world". I hand blended painterly textures with my original photograph in black and white to compliment the vintage feel of this historic Swiss scene.
