Description
Four of the six iconic bridges spanning the Douro River in Porto, Portugal. In the foreground is the most well known of all Porto's bridges, the Dom Luis I (Ponte Luis). This double decked metal arch bridge has taken passengers on foot, by car, trolleybus and metro across the river since opening in 1886. The views from the pedestrian walkway on the top deck are breathtaking but the height may also take your breath away as it is quite a drop to the water below! Behind, the Ponte do Infante, the newest of the six, just built in 2003. Next is the oldest, Maria Pia Bridge also known as Dona Maria, a former railway bridge that hasn't been used since 1991 but still stands as it is so loved by locals. Finally, just seen at the rear is the futuristic style Sao Joao Bridge, built to replace the Maria Pia. This triptych black and white image has hand blended textures and grain.
