Description
You probably wouldn't describe Hamburg in Northern Germany as quaint or full of old world charm like some of the other European cities you associate with cobblestone streets and historic abodes, but it does have a few little areas that still hark back to the days when merchants and traders transported their wares by canal. Take a look behind and beyond the contemporary towering architecture and you will find them. Neatly tucked away on Deichstrasse, the oldest remaining street of the Altstadt, pretty, colourful, multi windowed waterfront buildings with higglety pigglety rooftops give you a glimpse of history. By night, the glowing street lights and inviting warmth from within reflect on the pavements of Nikolaifleet, giving quite a different feel to the eerie gloom of a wet winter's day. In the distance, on the far right, the bright lights of the recently built Elbphilharmonie welcome visitors to the Hafen City quarter. I hand blended textures with my original photograph to compliment the old world feel of this historic Hamburg street scene.
