Perched high up on a wall at one side of the Mittlere Brucke (Middle Bridge) in Basel, Switzerland, the charming statue of 'Helvetia on Her Travels' looks out over the beautiful vista of the River Rhine and Altstadt. Her packed suitcase waits at her feet and I've sat next to her many times and wondered what she's thinking.... Is she taking in the view of Basel before her and feeling glad to be home to such a lovely place ... or is she deciding where to go next with that suitcase filled with all her worldly goods, where her next destination will be? Either way, I can relate to her as a traveler, I feel a certain kinship with Helvetia and always hope I will return to Basel again to sit beside her and share a thought or two. I hand blended a selection of textures with my original photograph to compliment the old world feel of this classic Basel city scene.
