Description
An architectural gem of Hamburg's UNESCO listed Kontorhaus District, the Chilehaus (Chile House) rises up 10 storys from pavement level and looms over the street below. Built in the early 1920's in the Brick Expressionism architectural style, this fabulous building was designed by German architect Johann Friedrich Hoger and is currently in use as office and retail space. The story of how the building got it's name is an interesting one. The man who commissioned the Chilehaus, Henry B. Sloman, emigrated to Chile from Germany and made is fortune there trading in Saltpetre. He named the building the Chilehuas in remembrance of the country that made him one of the richest men in Hamburg at that time. I hand blended a little texture with my original photograph in black and white, to compliment the old world feel of this classic Hamburg city scene.
