Description
One of the most visited bridges in the world, the Bridge of Sighs in Venice, Italy is very deserving of the vast amount of attention it receives. Surrounded by a variety of tales and folklore, it is easy to get it's allure. Constructed in the early 17th Century and designed by Italian architect Antonio Contino, this surprisingly small, but ever so impressive bridge has stood the test of time and attracts visitors from all corners of the world in their millions, to it's little piece of Venezia. Originally used as a corridor connecting the Doge's Palace and the prison, legend suggests that the bridge's name came to be because prisoners heading to their execution would look out of the small windows and sigh over what they believed would be their last view of their beloved Venice. If this is true or not....who knows? I prefer to believe that it got it's name because you can't help but sigh when you first set eyes on it, just as I did. I hand blended textures with my original vintage style photograph to achieve a more painterly style which I felt suited this classic Venetian scene.
